Rare and highly collectible Frank Whittington of Brockenhurst (New Forest) carved wooden fox hunting set, dating to the pre-WWII period.
Whittington is associated with early 20th century British sporting carvings, and his hunt groups are particularly sought after for their strong sense of movement, distinctive hand-carved finish, and traditional English subject matter.
This example depicts a classic fox hunt scene with mounted rider in red coat, full pack of hounds, and fox. The figures are individually carved with visible knife work and retain their original hand-painted surfaces. The elongated hounds and forward-driving composition are characteristic of Whittington’s work and give the set excellent display presence.
Condition:
Overall very good antique condition with age-related paint wear and surface handling marks. One hound has a repaired leg; the repair is stable and does not detract from display. No other significant structural issues noted.
Includes:
Mounted rider on horse
Five hounds
Fox
A scarce pre-war British sporting carving by a named maker, appealing to collectors of fox hunting memorabilia, New Forest interest, and traditional English country house decorative arts.
