Very rare tin-lithograph chocolate & sweetmeat vending machine / money box, c.1890s–early 1900s — fully working, original key & half-pennies.
Full descriptionA very rare tin-lithograph chocolate and sweetmeat vending machine that also serves as a money box, dating to circa the 1890s–early 1900s (approximately 130 years old). The piece is complete with its original key and a small group of old half-pennies, and the dispenser mechanism is fully working. The original glass front is fitted and intact.
The lithograph decoration to the front and back remains beautifully bright and highly decorative; the side panel has suffered wear and some damage with age, which is reflected in the photographs. Overall the piece displays honest, period character consistent with long use and survival.
Operation is simple and charming: a half-penny is placed in the chosen slot and the metal handle pulled to release a chocolate or sweetmeat from the corresponding compartment. The bank’s motto reads: “Take care of the pence and the pounds will take care of themselves.”
This is an excellent example for collectors of tinplate advertising, confectionery ephemera and early mechanical toys — rare, visually striking and ready to display. Please study the photos for condition and message me with any questions or for additional images.
